Cheng Yu
Cheng Yu played pipa (a Chinese Lute) on Shy Pandas for the Music Start CD. She started to learn and play music when she was 7 years old, and was born into a musical family (her father is a professional pipa player and tutor, and both of Cheng's sisters are singers). She is an internationally renowned pipa and guqin virtuoso, scholar and specialist in Chinese music. She holds degrees in Chinese music from the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, China (BMus.), the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and the University of London (MMus, PhD). She performs, records and researches both traditional and contemporary Chinese music, and also embarks on cross-cultural music collaborations. She is the founder of the UK Chinese Music Ensemble and London Youlan Qin Society and currently teaches the pipa and guqin at SOAS.
