Bamboo

The pandas are hiding in bamboo, their favourite food. Bamboo is a grass rather than a tree, and is the fastest growing plant in the world. In China and Japan there are forests of bamboo, so tall that they look like trees.  In China the bamboo is a symbol of long life.  Bamboo shoots are a feature of many Chinese take-away menus. Its wood is also used to make furniture and fabric.  It is environmentally friendly to grow and is so strong and light manufacturers are starting to use it to make skateboards and skis. It has even been used to make a bicycle frame!
