Dec 2007 saw the completion of the 1000th series of First Notes music workshops which soundLINCS has been running in pre-schools across the county for the last five years. Approximately 100,000 children have been involved since the programme started, providing a musical foundation for them from an early age.

The milestone 1000th First Notes residency took place at Portland Kindergarten on Lincoln's Tentercroft Street. A group of fifteen lively three-year olds plus three staff members have been joining in weekly sessions designed to introduce them to the joys of practical music-making, involving concepts like rhythm, pulse, tempo, dynamics and even elementary composition in a sociable and creative atmosphere.

Since its very first workshop, the First Notes programme has continued to develop. To date, 33 soundLINCS facilitators have delivered residencies in 365 settings in both the state-maintained and private childcare sectors. The sessions have encouraged 96,000 children, plus their parents, carers, siblings and pre-school practitioners, to experience practical music-making tailored to their needs and capabilities.

Each First Notes residency comprises a series of six workshops with pre-school children at weekly intervals. Separate sessions with staff and parents are also offered, with the aim of leaving the setting with the skills and confidence to introduce and develop music-making with all of their children. A resource pack which provides a complete user-friendly guide to creative music sessions with under-fives is also presented to settings on completion of each residency.

First Notes is one of a series of programmes managed by soundLINCS as part of its sound52 project. Designated a Youth Music Action Zone, sound52 is supported by a raft of funders including national charity Youth Music, Arts Council England - East Midlands - and Lincolnshire County Council, in addition to the county's seven district councils, six Arts Centres, Birth to 5 Service and Children's Links.
