Launch of Youth Music Week - Can you hear us?

Come and join in Youth Music Week with your under 5's for free at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square on Wednesday 24th October 2007. A day of workshops, master classes and showcases will kick-start the largest series of music events ever put on for young people across England and Wales. This groundbreaking cross arts event has been made possible by the collaboration between Youth Music and the National Gallery.

The workshops will be running in six different categories including early years, which members of the public will be able to take part in. Each workshop will take inspiration from the richness and diversity of the National Gallery's permanent collection and the "Scratch the Surface" exhibition.

The early years music-making workshops are open to all* and will be led by renowned early years music making expert, Cathy Dew, who has worked with Humber Youth Music Action Zone (Music4U). Cathy will be guiding Melody Monkey and friends on their first visit to the National Gallery, and feels, "it is important to give all children the opportunity to develop a love of music and the confidence to express themselves through it."

Enter the magical musical world of Melody Monkey and friends as she takes you and your child on a tuneful exploration of the Ruben's painting Het Steen. Allowing young children to engage with both music and art will be an unforgettable experience, so join us for what promises to be an enchanting day out.

Six spaces in the National Gallery will be transformed into aural environments for the day, each reflecting and interacting with the art around them. The sessions will be led by Youth Music's experienced music leaders, in collaboration with arts professionals from the National Gallery.

The early years workshops are FREE and take place in the Rubens room (Room 29) at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London with a session at 12.30pm and repeated again at 2.30pm.

*Numbers limited to a maximum of 15 children (0-5s) on a first come first serve basis.
