An Introduction to Early Years (0-5 year olds)
Identical to the last event in January, this free event offers an excellent introduction into working with early years. Organized by Music Leader, Youth Music’s initiative providing access to professional development for music leaders, this workshop offers two contrasting approaches.
Zoe Greenhalgh will introduce the Kodaly approach to music education. This focuses on engaging children in enjoyable, practical, carefully structured musical activity relevant to their physical, intellectual and emotional stage of development. This philosophy is based on teaching, learning and understanding music through the experience of singing. It is child centered using traditional singing games and rhymes to encourage each individual to find and develop a singing voice and to experience firsthand the joy of music. Teaching music this way with Early Years children has a huge impact in all aspects of the development of the child and is also great fun.
Mike Willoughby, who has been a mentor for Cumbria Arts in Education since its inception, uses an inclusive and differentiated approach. Combining dance, physical movement, song, and instrumental music making, his approach employs the imaginative use of instruments and improvisation, with special emphasis on children's natural creativity.
Participants will work half a day with each tutor, and this should provide a stimulating, as well as informative event. You'll probably have a lot of fun as well!
